Abstract:

This paper will examine the Pre-War Period on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Census records and wills will be examined for the listing of Blacks (both enslaved and free) with African names. Moreover, the project will include a reading of the secondary sources which map a history of African descended people in the area up to the Civil War; and additional primary sources will include narratives (including the writings of Frederick Douglass), folklore, and any material artifacts which can be usefully documented from the pre-war era on the Eastern Shore.
