Abstract:

The Slave Dwelling Project started by Mr. Joseph McGill of the National Trust for Historic Preservation has gained national attention since May of 2010. By midsummer of 2011 Mr. McGill recorded sleeping in over a dozen existing slave cabins. His documentation of these dwellings has the goal of the preservation of history at the heart of its message.
Dr. Cheryl Lane received a research award from Francis Marion University to assist in the formation of a data base as the knowledge of existing slave dwellings increases. This paper will highlight the collaborative efforts of Mr. McGill and Dr. Lane during the summer of 2011on this project.
