Abstract:

My Mater’s Thesis, “The Monument Time Could Not Wear Away: A History of The Shaw Memorial and The Historical Memory of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment,” explores the curious history of the Shaw Memorial in Boston. Dedicated to Col. Robert Gould Shaw in 1897 by a commission comprising of several prominent Boston Abolitionists, this monument was greeted with great fanfare and support from Bostonians. However, the monument would physically deteriorate due to neglect throughout the mid-twentieth century. Fortunately, the city’s African American community would return this monument to prominence in Boston’s historical landscape in the early 1980s. My project uses the Shaw Memorial as a locus for an examination of the development of the historical memory of the MA 54th Regiment, paying careful attention to how the physical changes to this monument and its role in, or absence from, commemorative activities reflect broader patterns of the historical memory of the Civil War, the historiography of the role African Americans played in the Civil War, the changing meaning of this monument throughout the twentieth century, and race relations within the city of Boston.
