Personality and Political Discussion: An Experimental Examination of the Influence of the Big 5, Right Wing Authoritarianism, and Social Dominance Orientation Personality Traits on Discussion Networks

Abstract:

Increasingly, personality is recognized as important for political behavior. To test how personality influences political discussion, I create an experiment with 256 undergraduates. The participants first take the Big 5, Right Wing Authoritarian, Social Dominance Orientation personality tests, and then are randomly-assigned to discussion groups of five. They were told to discuss a political problem of high salience at the time of the session. I videotaped their communication, and had hypothesis-blind coders analyze the discussion session. Using these data, I find that personality has a large and predictable influence on 1. who speaks, 2. who interrupts others, 3. who persuades, 4. who is persuadable, and 5. who gets upset. This research moves beyond traditional survey research, to analyze the psychological micro-foundations of political discussion networks.
