Body Image in Female Collegiate Athletics: Is athletic participation detrimental or beneficial?

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

An empirical investigation of positive and negative effects of athletics on body image is presented. Although similar body images were reported for collegiate volleyball players and non-athletes, athletes reported more emphasis on athletic bodies. Athletic body ideals, while potentially positive, led to body dissatisfaction when women believed they had failed to achieve the athletic ideal.
