Abstract:

This research investigates the increasingly common phenomenon of required bed rest during pregnancy. It examines the emotional, social, and physical consequences of bed rest for mothers and their babies, and explores the cultural assumptions implicit in the practice of asking women to lie inactive for a lengthy period of time.
