Knives and Alcohol: A Deadly Combination for Russians in Estonia

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Previous research has shown that in Estonia the share of Russians is higher both among homicide victims and perpetrators. In the last decade vast majority of homicide incidences have had an expressive nature and the causes of homicide have been linked to alcohol.
Presentation shows that alcohol has an important role to play in turning arguments into violence no matter the nationality of the perpetrator. At the same time Estonians’ higher alcohol consumption does not lead to higher levels of lethal violence. This controversy is explained through differences in types of violence used by Estonians and Russians. Estonians use more beating that is less likely to be followed by the death. Russians on the other hand carry more often sharp instruments such as knives. Injuries caused by them are more likely to lead to death of the victim.
