Abstract:

This study explores the language ideologies of diverse university students as constructed in essays from an introductory Linguistics class. Results show strong tendencies to support home language maintenance as an index of ethnic loyalty. The paper concludes by discussing the fluidity and contestation of language ideologies in globalizing environments.
