Israeli Drama: Constructing the Israeli Television Drama Series as an Art Form

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The current study examines whether products of so-called 'popular' cultural industries can be consecrated as works of art. By focusing on the social construction of definitions of quality in the field of television drama series production in Israel, the current study challenges Pierre Bourdieu’s theory that no artifact of 'popular culture' can be consecrated as a work of art because of the incompatibility of such artifacts with the autonomy-of-art ideology. My study of the broad empirical corpus, including television reviews and interviews with acclaimed Israeli television creators, reveals that definitions of artistic quality and commercialism in the Israeli field of television production show less tension than Bourdieu suggested. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the autonomy-of-art ideology is reconfigured to contain also the capitalist ideology.
