Abstract:

This paper explores the use of Individual Media System Dependency Theory as a way of
interpreting the use of Reality Television (RTV) by television consumers. Utilizing
Mechanical Turk to access responses to an online survey about RTV dependence and
containing a brief examination of the role of social media in RTV program selection, the
study also provides insight into the appeal of social media for enjoyment and selection of
RTV programming.
