Abstract:

Analyzing newspaper articles and television transcripts, this study explores how American news media have framed the issue of school shootings in the United States. More specifically, through an examination at both the individual and societal levels, this research seeks to understand attributions of responsibility represented within the news coverage. Using a representative sample of newspaper and television news transcripts covering school shootings between 1999 and 2012, this study employs content analysis method to explore how the media has addressed the questions of who is responsible for school shootings and what can be done about them. Implications of findings, as well as suggestions for future research are also considered.
