Binary or Busted! Transgender and gender variant children and youth in sport and recreationn

Abstract:

This paper summarizes my research with and about the participation of transgender and gender variant children and youth in North American sport and recreation. I interviewed 12 such children and youth and/or their parents or guardians and 6 allies and advocates as well as analyzing relevant Canadian and USA policies relating to transgender inclusion in sport and recreation. As for my findings/conclusion? The title of the paper says it all. While some recent flexibility relating to the possibilities for disjuncture between birth sex and affirmed sex has emerged, in order to participate in sport and physical recreation my research participants had to assume a binary gender category. I argue that this is inconsistent with a transformative and intersectional gender justice paradigm that seeks to de-stabilize oppressive ideologies and administrative practices of dyadic sex difference that perpetuate what Spade (2011) refers to as the maldistribution of security and vulnerability across populations.
