Teaching the Book Performing Sex: Pedagogical Points of Engagement, “Aha” Moments, and Using the Text to Grapple with Agency and Resistance

Abstract:

As a professor who has taught Performing Sex, I will highlight the classroom discussions, debates, and points of engagement as well as resistance to the text. My students are highly motivated to read about sex, but less familiar with its historical and cultural context, or feminist theorizing about its expressions. Reactions have ranged from the “aha” experience of recognizing that the personal is political, to resistance to the notion that sexual behavior can be understood as performance shaped/created by dominant cultural discourses. Performing sex has proven to be very effective in unsettling students’ ideas about sex, and provoking discussion and debate as they grapple with questions of agency and the possibilities for resistance to dominant narratives.

Ultimately, we argue that these sorts of conversations and dialogues are all too rare and that they provide a unique entry point into deconstructing hierarchies, allowing accessibility for students, bringing the text to life, and further refining our writing and teaching.
