Abstract:

Using Universal Design Principles and Technology in Online and Face-2-Face Courses

Understanding that there are a variety of ways in which students learn is more important in online classes when there is limited face-to -face interaction. This paper examines various ways to reach all types of learners by utilizing universal design for learning principals and technology in and outside the classroom. The authors explore how a Flip class can also be a Flex class by incorporating inside and outside of the class exercises at the same time maintaining rigorous curriculum. In fully online courses, the educators develop various techniques to bring life to the subject, expose the students to faculty members via Sociology Chats, incorporate video clips and current events as they are happening, as well as more formal/traditional formats. We maintain that online and hybrid courses can be viable and effective learning experiences for students by implementing universal design principles in online curriculum. This presentation/paper will provide visual examples in which to enhance student learning through effective use of technology.
