Quantitative Comparative Studies in the Analysis of Sport: Resources, Strategies, Theory

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

We review quantitative comparative studies of sport participation as an adjunct to research efforts to better understand the role of global factors shaping the character and dynamics of sport in the Post World War II era. The paper begins discussing the nature of comparative sport research, underscoring its' role in explicating world-level economic, political and especially cultural dynamics of the global system. Attention is then directed towards important contributions in comparative research, with a focus on the utility and limitations of quantitative cross-national studies. Focusing on limitations of available data for cross-national work, the paper offers suggestions for mitigating these limitations and provides results of analyses following the suggestions. Among other things, the results are consistent with arguments underscoring the proposition that world-level cultural dynamics have been instrumental in shaping sport in the late twentieth century.
