Illuminating the Unique Experiences of Single Fathers

Abstract:

This study, designed to help illuminate specific gendered and classed experiences within child-rearing, examines the influence of masculinity and class within the context of parenting using in-depth interview data of single fathers. Although previous literature has not been highly inclusive of single fathers, single mothers have been extensively researched and this was used as a base for this study by incorporating concepts ranging from gender, social support networks, access and use of services and overviews of daily life with children creating the potential to express the broad, yet unique experiences of single fathers. Using these narratives, many tended to feel threatened by the idea of using services or assistance and had refused at some point to access these programs, yet many had still utilized a tightly knit social network to provide care and other means of support necessary for the benefit and well-being of their child. Most of these fathers being highly participatory in their children’s lives and engaged in their care and growth, many had experienced some form of social stigma or judgment for being a care-giving father, and had made some adjustments to their previous ideas of 'being a man' after taking on this role. Within this research are policy implications for outreach to single fathers, social implications to better acknowledge and support these parents, and scholarly notice to a population that is growing yet currently under-studied.
