ReadRightNow: Designing Comprehensive Reading Programming

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

EDC’s ReadRightNow initiative began in 2010, and is being implemented in the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Zambia. ReadRightNow is qualitatively distinct both from the model for reading instruction used in the Gambia and from Save The Children’s Literacy Boost in a number of ways. This presentation compares and contrasts the ReadRightNow model with the prior two described, laying particular emphasis on the inclusion of methodologies for writing instruction and the strategies for home-school reading connections that the model promotes. The analysis also presents the strengths and drawbacks of the inherent “systems approach” that grounds the ReadRightNow framework. Evaluation data from programs implementing ReadRightNow is shared, and the adjustments and modifications made on the basis of that data are also addressed. This presentation asks important questions about the complexities of implementing core reading interventions in a fluid design context and discusses the challenges in capacity building that have to be resolved for reading reform to flourish in any developing country context in the long term.
