"The King Stay[s] the King:" The Multiple Masculinities of The Wire

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This qualitative study examines the televised police procedural The Wire (2002-2008) through the lens of Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity. Employing Fisher’s narrative paradigm, this narrative critique answers the question of how multiple masculinities are constructed in the program. Focusing on The Wire’s first season, the study finds that the program presents a counterhegemonic vision of police procedurals’ traditional hegemonic masculinity, positing it as a corrosive hierarchy that destroys marginalized and subordinated males.
