Abstract:

In the recent two decades, China’s rapid economic growth has gained much attention and prominence in the international arena. In the meantime, China is taking advantage of its development and trying to enhance its soft power through public diplomacy. However, with its controlled media sphere and censored digital space, China’s official public diplomacy is constrained by many shackles. This study explores Chinese digital public diplomacy and tries to understand how Chinese public diplomacy is dancing with shackles. The first part of this study examines different tools Chinese official public diplomacy works within the constraints put by the government. Second, the study explores the inherent difficulties Chinese digital public diplomacy is facing because of these constraints. Lastly, the paper will assesses the strategies and tactics of Chinese digital diplomacy and their potential impact on China’s national image and soft power.
