Hegemony or Resistance? On the Ambiguous Power of Communication

Abstract:

This presentation proposes a general reflection on the main theme of the IAMCR Conference that will be held in Montreal in July 2015. “Hegemony or resistance? On the ambiguous power of communication” reflects the history and the specific culture of the city of Montreal, but also echoes the everyday events of the world we live in. It refers to the central role of communication in different resistance movements in recent years such as Occupy, Idle No More, the Arab Spring, the Maple Spring in Quebec, etc. Such movements denounce what is perceived by many as the economic, political, cultural, and hegemonic systems, implemented by governments and big businesses around the world, that serve a narrow and self-interested goal at the expense of local populations and their cultures. But how can communication, as an academic discipline or a professional practice, position itself to specifically address these issues? That is the question that will be at the core of this presentation.
