Ethical Standards for Online Data

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The increasing importance of online communication for mass media and interpersonal communication has led to an abundant set of secondary data. This data is of intriguing interest for communication researchers since it provides insights into communicative processes, which were rather difficult or even impossible to access beforehand. However, not everything technically possible is also legitimate to do. The Association of Internet Researchers published a guideline for ethical decision-making, addressing three dimensions for which this tension is most prevalent (AOIR 2012). This includes the question of how the “human subject” is to be defined. This is of primary importance since it is a key criterion in most ethical regulations but is getting blurred on the internet. Furthermore, the delineation of 'public' and 'private' as well as the relation between data and person are crucial dimensions. The presentation discusses international differences regarding these vital aspects.
