Young Adolescents on Facebook: Peer Sexual Norms and Knowledge About Sex

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The popularity of social media sites for adolescents has been growing fast ― from a 55% usage rate in 2006 to >80% in 2011. Utilizing a 9th grade (aged 14-15) sample of 661 students from a larger, longitudinal evaluation of a sex education curriculum, we examined any relationships between Facebook use and household composition, peer norms, or knowledge about sex. We found significant positive correlations between using Facebook and living in a single mother family and going to parties where there were no adults present. Having a Facebook account and using it more frequently are both significantly correlated to more liberal peer sexual norms, such as not thinking that you should wait until you are older to have sex. Knowledge of technical sexual terminology was also associated with being on Facebook. These findings demonstrate the key contributions of peers within social media networks and their associations with risk-taking peer norms.
