Baseball and Baby Boomers: An Ethnographic Examination of Older Fans’ Experiences of Baseball

Abstract:

The intersection of two concerns, one theoretical and one applied, drives this project. First, in the last two decades, as more and more members of the baby boomer generation inched closer to and into retirement, scholars have expanded their examination of changes across the lifespan. Second, professional sports organizations, particularly Major League Baseball, have expressed a concern that generational preferences for the “game” experience may be affecting fan attendance and viewership. And yet few, if any, scholars have focused on the ways in which generational fan cohorts experience sport and more specifically, experience baseball. In this project I employ an ethnographic approach to understand how members of one cohort, baby boomers, engage and experience professional baseball as fans. In order to uncover their experiences, along with fifty 50-plus men and women, I participated in a week long Elderhostel program focusing on the sociological impact and organizational structure of professional baseball.
