Abstract: This perspective of the Civil War presents documentary evidence on African Americans who served in Confederate hospitals. Although not well represented in the historical narrative, a number of African Americans were listed as injured or infirmed; voluntarily serves as caregivers, worked as laundresses, cooks, and teamsters, and performed song and oration.
