Abstract: The Harry Potter series ignited a generation of young readers beginning in the late 1990s and continuing through the 2000s. Now, as this generation passes through the university system, the Potter series proves a useful device in attracting students to Sociology through Sociology of Literature courses. However, one of the difficult challenges in teaching Potter is to develop this generation's capacity to critically analyze their "comfort food." This paper examines a series of pedagogical techniques that help manuver students along the path of critical readership.
