Abstract: The Asian population is heterogeneous, yet many researchers continue to treat Asian American students as if they were a homogeneous ethnic category and overlook the differences within Asian ethnic category. This study explores whether there are between-group differences between Chinese Americans and Non-Chinese Asian Americans in linking parental involvement with student academic achievement.Results of this study indicate that although Chinese students are more academically successful in math, it is not clear whether their academic success can be attributed to certain parental practices. Differences in parenting styles fail to account for the observed ethnic differences between Chinese and Non-Chinese Asian students in math achievement.
