Abstract: In this study, we investigate the creation and operation of a Sociology Online Degree Completion Program at a large public California university. We focus on the origin of the program and student experiences in the program during its first year. More specifically, we look at the program from two perspectives: from that of faculty and administrators who helped develop and implement the program; and from that of the first group of students enrolled in the program. The program emerged over several years and we discuss the rationale for its formation, its emergence, and implementation. We concentrate our analysis primarily on the work of the Sociology Online Education Committee, which was instrumental in the creation of the program. We then examine the student populations served by the program and their experiences. In order to better understand the profile of the first student cohort, we compare the demographics of the students in the Online Degree Completion program with the demographics of transfer students in general, and we highlight pertinent similarities and differences. We conclude with a discussion of the program’s future, including challenges facing the program and how the program relates to the continued movement towards online classes in higher education. We thus offer a multidimensional and narrative examination of the creation of a Sociology Online Degree Program at a large public university.
