Abstract: The current study tests for evidence of critical consciousness (CC) in the relationship between sociocultural appearance standards and alcohol use among college women. Hierarchical regression models tested for evidence that internalization increases risk of college drinking. Tested models supported that binge drinking and alcohol problems were associated with internalization of sociocultural appearance standards. There was limited evidence of CC in the sample. Implications for investigating CC are discussed.
