Abstract: Interviews with Mexican American immigrant women with chronic pain revealed the profound impact of culture and gendered imperatives: matriarch, worker, sufferer, stoic. Our findings show that we must situate a chronic illness narrative within a life narrative, considering core value systems, access to medical care, and immigration experience.
