Abstract: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have long been the cornerstone of higher education for African Americans. The first HBCUs were founded prior to the Civil War and furthered the education of African-Americans who were primarily self-taught. Since 1837, with the founding of historic Cheyney University, HBCUs continue to make long-standing contributions to society.

The libraries of HBCUs hold material riches of the history and culture of the African American experience. Within the walls of HBCU libraries are some of the most dynamic collections on African-American history in modern society.

For the first time in history, library deans and directors at the nation’s 103 White-House designated HBCUS convened in 2002 to begin discussions on strengthening library services through increased cooperation. The HBCU Library Initiative was organized in 2001, and incorporated as the HBCU Library Alliance in 2006 as the only membership organization dedicated to enhancing the missions and visions of the nation’s HBCU libraries. The HBCU Library Alliance is now in its tenth year of service and supports member libraries to strengthen leadership, preserve HBCU photographic collections and digitize HBCU collections.

This presentation will detail the vibrant history and accomplishments of the HBCU Library Alliance as the premier membership organization supporting HBCU libraries.
