Abstract: At the end of the nineteenth century, Douglass is an old man reflecting on the aspirations and the accomplishments of the African American community, and the fight for citizenship. Through the course of his reflections, Douglass comes to the realization that all of his hopes and aspirations pre and post civil war, despite his loyalty to the Republican Party. This paper will focus on Douglass' reflections as penned by him while living in the District of Columbia.
