Abstract: This paper will examine the ways in which the Black Arts Movement using artistic production and presentation extended the Black Power Movement's language, imagery and objectives into the consciousness and practice of the African American community. Through literature, poetry, music, dance, film, visual art and theatre, the Black Arts Movement created and extended liberation identity and consciousness based on specific Black Power Movement objectives including Self Determination, Self Respect, Self Defense and Self Reliance.
