Abstract: The present study aims to explore the effect of patientsÂ’ use of online communities on doctor-patient communication and the mediating role of perceived social support and patient empowerment. A recursive structural equation model hypothesizing the causal relationship among patientsÂ’ online community activities, perceived social support, a sense of empowerment, and doctor-patient communication are tested within the context of Korean diabetes patients. In results from the Internet survey of 464 respondents, patientsÂ’ use of online community increased their intention to participate in doctor-patient communication through the process of perceiving social support from online communities; thus feeling a greater sense of empowerment. The findings from the present study will contribute to the theoretical accumulation of patient antecedents of doctor-patient communication not only by exploring the effect of computer-mediated social support on patient empowerment and doctor-patient communication, but also revealing the process of developing patient-initiated empowerment.
