Abstract: This study examines the effects of news frames on audiences?issue interpretations and attitudes, and how such effects are moderated by individual issue schemas. An experiment was conducted whereby four news articles systematically manipulated by value or consequence frames were presented to participants in a controlled issue framing environment. Results indicated that while news frames can indeed activate frame-related issue interpretations, they had limited impact on issue attitudes. Individual issue schemas, however, were found to be a significant moderator of framing effects. Those with distinct issue schemas differed significantly in issue interpretations and attitudes. Implications of these findings and future research directions are discussed.
