Abstract: The enlargement of the EU may have two major impacts on CFSP. Firstly, the range of interests within the EU has certainly grown. Not least because of historic and contemporary experiences with their big neighbor Russia, the Central European member states see the USA as an additional anchor for European stability, whereas major old member states lately have been trying to set up a more autonomous European foreign policy. Secondly, the Commission's New Neighborhood Initiative of 2003 tries to formulate a foreign policy strategy towards the new neighbors after enlargement. This puts some of the old and many of the new member states into the responsible position of co-defining policy aims and therefore making an important step towards European integration. The paper aims at analysing both impacts on the conduct of CFSP in the first months after accession.
