Abstract: In this study we look at the role of two online multiplayer games, Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft in the maintenance, strengthening and weakening of real life social ties and how individuals perceive those ties in action. Exploring stories of game entry and social tie transformation, we illuminate some of these underexplored deployments of social ties. While multiplayer games are designed in a way that requires increased sociability between players for success, the evidence collected suggests that a shift in tie utilization has occurred. Rather than simply effectively utilizing many weak ties created in-game or imported from offline, we found that the strong ties of “real world” connections both motivate and maintain membership in online gaming communities.
