Abstract: Indonesian voters have experienced dozens of free and fair elections since the return of democracy in 1999. After successful general elections in 1999 and 2004, Indonesian voters elected directly president in 2004 and since June 2005, local elections for governor, mayor, and district head positions were introduced as the final part of decentralization policy. The 2009 general and presidential elections, however, will become an important test of how strong democracy has been institutionalized. After a decade of democracy, voters will elect representatives and national leaders that will bring Indonesia passing difficult times of global economic crisis and entering a new era of political leadership transition. With many changes in the electoral system and political setting, how will Indonesian voters respond to the coming election? Are Indonesian voters more politically savvy than before?

Abstract: During the past three years, of the Mbeki presidency South Africans witnessed the sacking of the deputy president following an excruciating court case against Jacob Zuma. The case’s outcome led to Mbeki resigning from office seven months before his term was due. This judicial drama is juxtaposed with escalating instability in neighboring Zimbabwe, xenophobic attacks that rocked the country in May, and eventually a formation of a breakaway party, Congress of the People (COPE), by disgruntled members of the ANC. As South Africans gear up for their fourth democratic election between the months of April and June 2009, it is compelling to ask: should we anticipate a surprising outcome or a further consolidation of African National Congress (ANC) dominance? This paper seeks to discern the main drivers that will determine the outcome of the 2009 elections. It will be argued that it is unlikely that a change in government will take place in South Africa. Therefore we should expect to see that the ANC will yet again get the approval of the majority. However, the advent of an opposition from the ruling ANC contributes to a shift from race and ethnicity as a criteria in voting behavior to opposition politics.

Abstract: As many have recognized, American civil religion has served to provide a sacred canopy, or legitimizing mythos, for mainstream American civic pieties. Yet alongside the history of this mainstream civil religion has existed a more specific and focused reform tradition of civil religious discourse. Markedly different from its mainstream counterpart, it has offered its resources for the forceful critique of American shortcomings and the building of movements for social and political reform.
