Abstract: In 1905, in Commugny, Switzerland, a farmhand murdered his pregnant wife and two daughters. The murders triggered a moral panic about absinthe, and within the decade a ban on absinthe was established in both France and Switzerland. This paper explores the history of absinthe and absinthism and explains the development of its fearsome reputation in the century before the Commugny Massacre.
