Abstract: This paper presents findings of ongoing research of an interdisciplinary research program concentrated on how new digital media practices involving the Internet impact on the lives, identities, learning and socialization of migrant youth. The focus is put on second-generation Dutch-Moroccan youth, meaning children born in the Netherlands of parents who actually migrated to the Netherlands. In this paper an attempt is made to unravel processes of online identification by looking at circulated pictures and created hyperlinks. The practices found online display an ongoing construction of heterogeneous and differential selves - that operate beyond the binary of global and local contexts - as they emphasize different loyalties and affiliations. Dutch-Moroccan youth were shown to make the Internet a convivial Mocro place. This concerns a bottom-up construction of ethnicity through the consumption and production of imageries and links that are often not either global or local but both.

"How Financial Institutions Shape Labor Process Practice: An Ethnographic Study of a Dot-Com Startup" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association Annual Meeting, Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, NV, Aug 20, 2011 Online <APPLICATION/PDF>. 2019-11-20 <http://citation.allacademic.com/meta/p506715_index.html>

Abstract: How do financial institutions shape labor process practice? Labor process studies ignore finance, while organizational theory accounts of finance focus upon corporate control but do not extend the analysis into the labor process. This ethnographic study of a Silicon Valley startup during the late dot-com bubble seeks to fill this gap. During the bubble, the financial community demanded a plausible potential for future profitability in startups before it would embrace an IPO. In the startup, rival departments offered competed visions of what role production should play in establishing an appearance of potential future profitabilility.Software developers emerged victorious in this struggle, framing a methodical, rigidly regulated process that reflected operational discipline as the best way to demonstrate the startup’s superiority to irresponsibly run dot-coms. Practice was characterized by rules that made managing technical risk the collective responsibility of the entire company and which gave developers the political means to resist work deemed too risky. The bursting of the dot-com bubble set off a struggle by executive management to break the developers’ control over production, eventually resulting in a new, deregulated logic of practice in which the responsibility for managing risk devolved onto individual developers.

Abstract: From its founding by King Louis XIV in 1680 until the Revolution, the Comédie‐Française enjoyed a monopoly on the performance of French-language drama in Paris. During that period, it was arguably the most important cultural institution in France and perhaps in Europe as a whole. Its archive includes receipt registers containing details of the troupe's daily box office take from its founding to the present day. The Comédie-Française Registers Project (CFRP) digitizes these registers and records the information they contain in a database that provides detailed sales and performance data on approximately 35,000 discrete nightly performances in Paris. The registers and their data constitute a remarkable resource for historians of the early modern theatre, especially those interested in political contexts, social patterns, cultural trends, and the careers of actors and playwrights. This presentation will introduce RSA attendees to the project, which will become available online in summer 2015.
