Abstract: A growing number of philanthropic foundations are adopting impact investment strategies in the United States. This research seeks to contribute to the scholarly research on foundations’ impact investing through two main objectives: to identify the actors and to analyze the strategies adopted for such a change. Researchers use qualitative research method, such as narrative analysis, to interview 10 American philanthropic foundations that have experienced the shift from grant-making only to impact investment. The result of this research will broaden the existing theory on the organizational change and provide practical implication for foundations that are interested in implementing this new strategy.

Abstract: The study explored challenges faced by state policymakers managing grant funds and proposes a process to build evaluation capacity and promote continuous improvement across grants that have similar goals. In government programs, the potential exists for a disconnect between the way programs operate and perform at the state level and the expectations for operation and performance at the local level. Government agencies can model exemplary evaluation practices, holding themselves to the same rigorous standards they expect from grantees and supporting grants to meet those standards. From ten case studies of professional development grants (2006 to 2009), a state agency was able to support building evaluation capacity and build it into all stages of the granting process, demonstrating return on investment.

Abstract: This paper investigates the amount of government grants allocated to nonprofit sector at the state level. It analyzes grants in terms of three factors identified in previous research – state finance, state politics, and state demographics. The results show that nonprofit organizations are more likely to receive revenue in the form of government grants if they are located in states with higher state revenue, more conservative citizens, a lower population growth rate, a higher population density, and a lower college graduation rate. This research provides insights to nonprofit organizations regarding the state factors that influence government grant allocation.

Abstract: Community foundations, with a unique focus on place and positions of legitimacy within communities, are increasingly called to play leadership. However, community foundations have also been accused of being paternalistic, unaware and inattentive to broader community needs, resistant to change, and idiosyncratic grantmaking practices often means that local grantmaking may not match the local needs. We answer the question: what is the role of organizational strategic planning tools in grant making decisions? We test our model using a data sample collected from a variety of sources including a newly developed survey for United Ways in Texas, matched to their 990 allocation data reports.
