Abstract: This presentation outlines the history, development and implementation of Knowing the Land Beneath Our Feet (KLBF), a digital walking tour researched and designed by Spencer Lindsay and Sarah Ling with advisors from both academic and Indigenous communities on the traditional, unceded, ancestral territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Musqueam people. KLBF builds on a mapping platform designed by Digital Media Technologies at the University of British Columbia to provide walking tours of UBC’s Vancouver campus on ʔəlqsən (Point Grey). It connects students, faculty, staff and community members to sites on campus that tell stories, encode values, and point the way to respectful relationships with Musqueam and other First Nations. Using Quick Response Codes and the Global Positioning Systems built into cellphones KLBF augments the UBC environment with stories, videos, photographs and text drawn from extensive archival research and interviews with community members and elders. In this presentation, we describe the challenges, successes, and protocols involved with creating and implementing a digital tour and illustrate, via current academic literature (Chapin, Lamb, Threlkeld) and examples from KLBF and other relevant Indigenous mapping tools (Firelight Group, Indigenous Mapping Network), the ways in which digital technologies can contribute to awareness of Indigenous histories and issues in a colonized and contested space. This presentation provides theoretical and practical information on selecting and developing a digital mapping platform and highlight best practices for integrating existing archives and community protocol into digital technology. We also showcase pedagogical materials created to support and sustain the tour through UBC courses.
