"Interrupting Heroic Realism: The Role of the Society of Easel Painters' (OST) Historical-Materialist Philosophy in the Evolution of Early Soviet Art" Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies 45th Annual Convention, Boston Marriott Copley Place, Boston, MA, <Not Available>. 2019-10-23 <http://citation.allacademic.com/meta/p654849_index.html>
Publication Type: Panel Paper
Abstract: In my paper I describe how OST developed its strange and laconic realism as a political strategy in direct response to the work of AKhRR and the Constructivists. I argue that OST's particular method of realist painting was a key aspect of the group's historical-materialist philosophy of the visual, and explain why they imagined it would be a better catalyst to the development of the new socialist society than either the work of the Constructivists or AKhRR. I begin to suggest ways in which their strategy and this argument may have influenced the development of official Soviet policy on the visual arts, and socialist realism in particular.
