Abstract: This paper aims to discuss the relationship between the two most prominent exile publishers, who began their activities after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies in 1968. Far from being simple, the relationship alternated between collaboration and rivalry according to the context of the international political situation. Both publishing houses did what they could to promote independent Czechoslovak culture and, despite having differing political priorities, both played an important role in preserving independent Czechoslovak culture by publishing both the works of proscribed authors at home and of dissident writers in exile.
