Abstract: In 1625, Samuel Purchas (1577-1626) published Hakluytus Posthumus or Purchas his Pilgrimes, contayning a History of the World in Sea Voyages and Lande Travells, by Englishmen and others. In that anthology (III.ii.252-281), there was a shortened English version of Peregrinaçao by Fernão Mendes Pinto (c 1509-1583) that had been originally published in 1614. Mendes Pinto’s work included an account of his travels to China. In this presentation, I will first present the image of China in Purchas’ version of Peregrinaçao in terms of “self” and “other.” Next I will endeavor to explain what changes of the original image of China were related to Purchas’ manner of translation and editing. In this regard Purchas is in a long tradition of translators and editors who have never been in the land being described and create a new image of it by their changes and modifications.
